Choosing the right eCommerce platform
There is no single eCommerce platform that is right for every online store. We consider the number and type of products, catalogue complexity, search and filtering, payments, shipping, stock management, subscriptions, integrations, who will manage the store and realistic future requirements.
WooCommerce
A strong option where a business needs flexibility, advanced WordPress functionality, greater control over the website or more complex integrations and customisation. Because it runs on WordPress, the store also requires appropriate hosting, maintenance, security and ongoing updates.
Shopify
A dedicated hosted eCommerce platform with established store management and a large ecosystem of apps. Additional apps may introduce ongoing platform commitments or dependencies, and some requirements may be constrained by the platform, so functionality should be assessed carefully.
Wix eCommerce
Can suit relatively straightforward eCommerce requirements, particularly where a business also wants an easy-to-manage website within a hosted platform. For complex catalogues or advanced integrations, WooCommerce or Shopify may be more appropriate.
We are platform-neutral. Our recommendation is based on the project's requirements and the way the business operates, not on a commitment to one technology.
Payments, shipping and delivery
Payment requirements should be established before a store is finalised. Relevant factors include:
- Where the business is based and where its customers are located
- Supported currencies and payment methods
- Compatibility with the chosen eCommerce platform
- Recurring or subscription payment requirements
- Refunds and payment administration
- The provider's own account, approval and verification requirements
For South African businesses this may involve providers such as Payfast, Peach Payments, DPO/PayGate, Yoco or iKhokha, depending on the project and current platform support. Availability and compatibility are always confirmed for the individual store. Payment providers charge their own fees, which are separate from our development fees.
Shipping can range from flat rates and free-shipping rules to weight-based or location-based delivery rates, local collection, delivery areas, courier integration and live shipping rates.
